Ariadne Labs has partnered with the Harvard Medical School student group, HMS COVID-19 Student Response Team, to develop and disseminate evidence-based, practical community guidance to help the general public protect themselves against COVID-19. In the midst of the overwhelming amount of information on COVID-19 currently circulating, this partnership aims to provide accurate, timely, and easily actionable guidance on a variety of everyday activities, ranging from safe grocery shopping to mask use.
Masks
The research is clear—masks and face coverings are key to preventing the spread of COVID-19, especially as society begins to reopen. It is our recommendation that everyone wear masks or face coverings in public settings. We also recognize and are sensitive to the fact that many people of color, Black men in particular, have experienced increased incidents of racism and bias when wearing a mask. We urge the public and law enforcement to be mindful of their biases to enable all members of society to wear a mask as we all play a role in minimizing community transmission.
Mask use has been shown to significantly decrease the spread of COVID-19. It’s possible to be infected with the virus and spread it even without showing symptoms. Wearing a mask when you’re near other people is an easy and effective way to reduce the spread of COVID-19. Many towns and cities require people to wear masks when you can not remain 6 feet from others – check your local news to stay up to date with local regulations. Thank you for wearing a mask and protecting your community.
Remember to follow safety guidelines even when you’re wearing a mask. Stay 6 feet away from others when possible, wash your hands often, and don’t touch your face.
Gloves
The coronavirus is not transmitted through the skin, but gloves used properly may act as an additional protective barrier when running essential errands. When wearing gloves, remember to always treat the outside of the gloves as if they are contaminated.
Wearing gloves does not replace or reduce the need for frequent handwashing.
