Dr. Neel Shah comments on the concerning state of maternal care in Brazil.
As director of the Delivery Decisions Initiative at Ariadne Labs, Dr. Shah has been a tireless advocate for improvements and changes in obstetrics, including labor and delivery protocols . He has been a driving force in Ariadne Labs’ Expecting More, a movement that envisions greater community support for all those growing families. He has been active in the annual March for Moms event. His team is currently collaborating with hospitals across the United States, and using methods from design, systems engineering, and management to reduce the epidemic of avoidable c-sections.
Dr. Shah is an assistant professor of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Biology at Harvard Medical School. He is also the Founder and Executive Director of Costs of Care, a global NGO that curates insights from clinicians that help delivery systems provide better care at lower cost. He is listed among the “40 smartest people in healthcare” by the editorial staff of Becker’s Hospital Review, and has been profiled by CNN, the New Yorker, and other outlets for his efforts to expose how overtreatment can harm patients. In 2015 he co-authored the book Understanding Value-Based Healthcare (McGraw-Hill). He is an advisor to Square Roots (a maternal health life sciences company) and the Healthcare Financial Management Association.
